The conceptual thread for my folio series came out of a timely TED Talk by Jeff Speck and my own frustrations with transitioning into daily commuting after living in a town where everything was in walking-distance.
A walkable Houston is important for wide-reaching reasons, but includes surprising ones, like the increased safety in walkable communities. A while back, I wrote a series of articles on sustainable agriculture. One thing that always stayed with me was a comment from Kim Steeley. He said that people in our town drive past three or more dairy farms on the way to buy milk from 150 miles away. It is the incredulity of that reality which provides the lens I used to examine what urban planning projects, like Buffalo Bayou, do for Houston and why they matter.
